Catterick Racecourse
A dual-purpose race track in North Yorkshire which hosts both flat and National Hunt jump racing, Catterick Racecourse is an undulating, left-handed circuit that’s just over a mile round. The Grade 4 track is one of the most glamorous racecourses in Northern England and is a great blend of the old and new with the 100-year-old grandstand still standing today.
The flat course is just nine furlongs in circumference, with the sprint track all downhill creating a racing environment that’s well suited to front runners. The National Hunt circuit is ten furlongs, including a fairly hefty run-in of 240 yards. It’s useful to note that the jump fences are quite stiff, so could prove a difficult proposition for National Hunt rookies.
Catterick is a track that’s very popular with local trainers with the well-attended meetings and friendly atmosphere often the ideal proving ground for maidens. The course lends itself very well to the more agile types that can lie handy. The sharp turns of the circuit mean it’s a course for proven jockeys with the ability to handle the bends.
As it’s one of the smaller courses in the North of England, Catterick does not host too many major meetings. Catterick Bridge hosts 28 race meetings every calendar year, with 18 flat races between April and November, followed by ten National Hunt races.
Geegeez says: “When the ground is soft at Catterick, high numbers are best in five furlong sprint races. However, when the ground is good to firm, lower stall numbers are preferred. The soft ground leads to jockeys moving over to race nearest the grandstand rail and are always favoured in round-course races.
“In the same manner as Brighton, Catterick is very much a track that favours course specialists, so be sure to look for winning form from both the stable and the jockey around here.”
